Abakhwetha

The Abakhwetha blanket is worn during the Xhosa initiation ritual marking the passage from boyhood to manhood. The red stripe on this blanket symbolises blood and recognises the wearer’s successful transition to manhood. After the ritual is complete the blanket is burnt to signify the end of childhood. Made from 55% acrylic, 40% polyester and 5% cotton.
